Bouncers injured in street melee
Three men were stabbed and one man was arrested early yesterday after a melee broke out near a row of bars in the Faneuil Hall area, police said.
No one sustained life-threatening wounds, authorities said, but one of the victims underwent surgery yesterday afternoon. Police arrested William P. Ekasala, 29, of Boston, after he allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed the three men multiple times before throwing the weapon into some bushes.
The melee occurred about 1:30 after a group of men tried to enter Club Q at 25 Union St. but were turned away by a bouncer, said Noel Gentelles, the club's communications director. The club closes at 2 a.m., Gentelles said, and starts shutting down operations at 1:40.
The confrontation at the door ''turned out to be one big street argument," Gentelles said. It spilled onto the street just as several bars and clubs were closing for the night.
''That's when the incident escalated," said Officer John Boyle, a police department spokesman.
The stabbing occurred at 45 Union St. According to police and witnesses, Ekasala pulled a knife on two Club Q doormen and a bouncer from another bar. Police did not identify the three bouncers. Two of the men were taken to Massachusetts General Hospital. One was taken to Boston Medical Center.
Meanwhile, other, smaller fights were breaking out on the block, said Gentelles.
''I would say there was alcohol involved," he said. ''It's not really possible to tell whether the actual melee that happened out there was as a result of a number of different instances happening at the same time."
Other bouncers got involved in the fight and some of them restrained Ekasala until the police arrived, according to witnesses. Another witness found the knife and gave it to police, said Boyle.
Gentelles said that both Club Q employees are 24 years old and live in Greater Boston. . He said the one who required surgery is expected to be fine.
Ekasala will be arraigned today in Boston Municipal Court on charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.
